The Mercedes-Benz GLE has been in production since 2015, evolving through two generations. Early models carry straightforward toughened rear glass, whilst later variants — particularly from the early 2020s onwards — feature integrated antenna elements and alarm-wire circuits laminated into the glass for reception and vehicle security systems.
Mercedes rear windows on current GLE models are available in privacy-tinted configurations, and some variants include an embedded alarm wire that forms part of the vehicle's anti-theft circuit. Replacement glass must match these specifications exactly so that reception and security systems function correctly when the new panel is bonded in.
Unlike windscreen replacement, rear-window jobs do not involve ADAS calibration — the GLE's camera systems are mounted behind the windscreen. However, shard cleanup is a significant part of the job, as the original glass arrives shattered, and small fragments can lodge in places fitters can't always reach on the day.
