Had to replace the windscreen on our 18 year old car

Had to replace the windscreen on our 18 year old car because it had become dangerous due to thousands of micro chips. The low winter sun made it impossible to see out of. Searching online found UK Car Glass. The price was reasonable and I made an online booking for 2 days later. Unfortunately due to storms a nice lady from the company phoned me and asked if we could postpone fitting for 2 days till the weather cleared which was no problem. The fitter turned up as promised and the job was done within half an hour. Overall a good experience. UK Car Glass appear to be a nationwide company who sub contract to existing windscreen fitting companies. In view of this it may be worthwhile directly contacting a local firm first to check their pricing as it's possible they may be a bit cheaper because their won't be a middleman. However, I've no complaints. Ease of booking, communication etc is excellent.

Very happy with UK car glass

Very happy with UK car glass. They offered the lowest quote and an online booking service. After an initial confirmation email, I heard nothing further for a week, so I called to check that my car was still booked in for a new windscreen. I was informed that it was and they would be in touch to confirm the ETA. The team kept me informed over the weekend, the technician called and updated me again on the day, and arrived when he said he would. The screen was changed efficiently and the technician was polite and helpful. I would use the company again and recommend UK car glass to others.

What to expect during your BMW 2 Series windscreen replacement

Booking your BMW 2 Series windscreen replacement is straightforward and takes just a couple of minutes online.

  1. 1

Answer a quick online quiz about your 2 Series — model year, trim, and any ADAS features you've noticed. This takes under 60 seconds.

  2. 2

Receive an instant quote tailored to your exact variant. The quote includes fitment and any calibration required.

  3. 3

Book your preferred date and time — choose mobile fitting at your address or a workshop visit, depending on calibration needs.

  4. 4

Our parts-check team confirms your glass specification and any ADAS requirements before your appointment.

  5. 5

On the day, an approved fitter arrives with your matched glass. Windscreen replacement typically takes 45–90 minutes; if your 2 Series has a camera system, static calibration is completed as part of the job.

  6. 6

Your fitter confirms the minimum drive-away time before leaving — this varies based on adhesive and conditions but is confirmed on the day.

All work is backed by a two-year warranty covering workmanship and glass quality.

Mobile fitting or workshop visit for your 2 Series?

Most 2 Series windscreen replacements can be arranged as mobile fitting at your address. However, if your variant includes a camera system requiring calibration, the job is scheduled at a workshop so both replacement and ADAS recalibration can be completed in one location.

This 'no-split' approach ensures calibration is properly completed on the day — crucial for lane-assist and collision-avoidance systems to work safely. Your quote will indicate whether workshop fitting is needed; if so, your specialist will guide you through available times.

Dynamic calibration uses road driving to recalibrate your camera after windscreen replacement.

    What it means

Dynamic camera calibration is a procedure in which a technician drives the vehicle on marked roads at set speeds after the windscreen has been fitted and the adhesive has cured. During this drive, the forward-facing camera relearns its reference points — lane markings, road signs, road edges and surrounding traffic patterns — so it can resume accurate operation of camera-dependent safety and driver-assistance systems. This recalibration is necessary because any windscreen replacement, even with precision fitting, can introduce small shifts in the camera's optical alignment relative to the road.

    How to tell

Check your vehicle's handbook or contact your dealer to confirm whether your car has a forward-facing camera system. If it does, ask the dealer whether your specific model requires dynamic (road-drive) or static (target-board) calibration after windscreen replacement. You can also ask your fitter — they will establish this when they look up your vehicle's specification.

    Replacement impact

After your windscreen is fitted and the bonding has cured, a technician will drive the vehicle on marked roads at controlled speeds to allow the camera to relearn its environment. This extends the overall job duration beyond the glass-fitting time alone. Depending on your vehicle, calibration may be performed during the same visit or scheduled separately. We confirm the exact procedure and location (mobile or workshop) when we look up your specific vehicle.

  • Solar Control3
    2014–2022

On the BMW 2 Series: fitted on 3 of the 16 windscreen variants we list (19%); model years 2014–2022.

Solar control glass absorbs infrared rays to reduce heat and improve cabin comfort.

    What it means

Solar control is a coating applied to the windscreen that absorbs the sun's infrared radiation rather than allowing it to pass through into the cabin. This reduces solar heat gain, helping to keep the interior cooler and more comfortable, particularly in warm weather or direct sunlight. The coating is transparent to visible light, so it doesn't darken the windscreen or affect visibility. It's a passive thermal management feature that works continuously whenever the sun is shining on the glass.

    How to tell

Check your vehicle's specification sheet or contact your dealership service centre to confirm whether solar control glass is fitted. Some manufacturers list it as 'solar control windscreen', 'heat-reflective glass', or 'thermal management glass'. It's a factory-fitted feature and won't be visibly obvious from outside the car — the coating is integral to the glass itself.

    Replacement impact

Solar control glass is a factory-fitted specification. When replacing the windscreen, a solar control variant must be sourced to match the original. This is a standard glass type with no special fitting implications or calibration requirements. Cure and drive-away times follow normal windscreen bonding procedures. Confirm with your fitter that the replacement glass includes solar control to maintain the original thermal performance.

  • Camera2
    2015–2026Calibration varies by vehicle

On the BMW 2 Series: fitted on 2 of the 16 windscreen variants we list (13%); model years 2015–2026; calibration varies by vehicle.

A camera mounted near the rear-view mirror monitors the road ahead for lane-keep and traffic-sign features.

    What it means

A forward-facing camera positioned in the windscreen header area (typically mounted on or near the rear-view mirror bracket) captures video of the road ahead. This camera feeds data to driver-assistance systems such as lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, autonomous emergency braking, and traffic-sign recognition. The camera is a core component of modern ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) and requires precise alignment after windscreen replacement to ensure these safety features function correctly.

    How to tell

Look for a small dark triangular or lens-shaped component mounted in the black plastic trim area above the windscreen, typically centred near the rear-view mirror or slightly to one side. Your vehicle's handbook or infotainment menu may reference 'Lane Assist', 'Traffic Sign Recognition', or 'Autonomous Emergency Braking'. Ask your dealer or service centre directly if your car is equipped with a forward-facing camera system.

    Replacement impact

Windscreen replacement on camera-equipped vehicles requires calibration of the camera system after the new glass is fitted. The exact calibration procedure—whether static (using a target board in a controlled environment) or dynamic (road-based)—varies by vehicle make, model, and year. We confirm the precise calibration requirement when we look up your specific vehicle. Calibration ensures lane-keep, sign recognition, and emergency-braking systems function safely. This may extend the fitting schedule and may necessitate workshop-based fitting rather than mobile attendance.

  • HUD - Head Up Display2
    2019–2026No calibration after replacement

On the BMW 2 Series: fitted on 2 of the 16 windscreen variants we list (13%); model years 2019–2026; no calibration after replacement.

A Head-Up Display projects your speed, navigation cues and key alerts onto the windscreen so you can read them without looking down.

    What it means

A Head-Up Display (HUD) projects driving information — speed, navigation cues, ADAS alerts — onto the windscreen in your line of sight, so you can read it without taking your eyes off the road. The projector is mounted in the dashboard and shines the image upwards onto a special HUD-compatible windscreen that uses a wedge-shaped laminate to prevent a ghost image. Common on premium and sports models, increasingly standard on mid-range cars from the 2020s onwards.

    How to tell

Check your vehicle's specification sheet or handbook under 'display features' or 'HUD'. Look for a small projector unit mounted on the dashboard, typically below the steering wheel or in the instrument cluster area. When you start the vehicle, a bright image should appear on the lower windscreen area. Your dealer's service centre can confirm whether your specific model and trim level includes a HUD.

    Replacement impact

Your replacement windscreen needs to be HUD-compatible — built with the correct wedge laminate so the projected image stays sharp and double-free. Once the HUD-compatible glass is fitted, the projector itself typically doesn't need recalibration: image position is user-adjustable via your dashboard controls. We confirm your vehicle uses the HUD-compatible windscreen variant when ordering, so the replacement matches the original.

  • Dark Grey Sun Strip1
    2014–2020

On the BMW 2 Series: fitted on 1 of the 16 windscreen variants we list (6%); model years 2014–2020.

A dark-grey tinted band runs across the top of your windscreen to reduce glare from the sun.

    What it means

A dark-grey sun strip is a gradient-tinted band integrated into the windscreen's laminate layer at the top edge. It reduces glare and heat from direct sunlight without compromising visibility. Sun strips are a windscreen-only feature because they are built into the polyvinyl butyral (PVB) interlayer during manufacture — toughened side and rear glass cannot incorporate them. The dark-grey variant is a factory specification on certain vehicles, chosen for its aesthetic match to the original finish and optical properties.

    How to tell

Look at the top edge of your windscreen from outside the vehicle. You will see a dark-grey gradient band running horizontally across the width. If your original windscreen has this dark tint (rather than the standard lighter grey), your replacement must match it. Check your vehicle's handbook or contact your dealer's service department to confirm the sun strip colour specification for your model.

    Replacement impact

Replacement windscreens with a dark-grey sun strip must be sourced to the exact factory specification. The tint is integral to the laminate and cannot be added or modified after manufacture. Your fitter will confirm the correct variant is in stock before fitting. The dark-grey specification may have a longer lead time than standard grey; we will advise at quote if any delay is expected. Installation and cure procedures are identical to standard windscreens.

  • Grey Sun Strip1
    2014–2020

On the BMW 2 Series: fitted on 1 of the 16 windscreen variants we list (6%); model years 2014–2020.

A grey-tinted band across the top of your windscreen that reduces glare from sunlight and reflections above.

    What it means

A grey sun strip is a tinted gradient band built into the top edge of the windscreen during manufacture. It sits within the laminated glass layers and gradually fades from opaque grey at the very top to clear further down. The strip is designed to reduce glare and reflections from sunlight, street lights, and oncoming headlights, improving comfort and visibility for the driver without obstructing the view of traffic signals or overhead hazards. Sun strips are a factory-applied feature unique to windscreens—they cannot be added to side or rear glass because those are typically toughened rather than laminated.

    How to tell

Look at the top of your windscreen from inside the vehicle. You will see a grey-tinted band that fades to clear glass. The tint is gradual and integral to the glass itself, not a removable film or coating. Your vehicle's service records or handbook may also list it as a standard feature. If unsure, ask your dealer or service centre whether your specific model includes a sun strip.

    Replacement impact

When replacing a windscreen with a sun strip, the replacement glass must be sourced in the exact matching variant—including the sun-strip tint and fade profile. Aftermarket and OE glass are both available for most vehicles, but the variant must be correct to match your original. There is no calibration required for the sun strip itself. If your windscreen also carries camera or sensor features, those will be calibrated separately according to your vehicle's needs.

  • Light Sensor1
    2014–2022

On the BMW 2 Series: fitted on 1 of the 16 windscreen variants we list (6%); model years 2014–2022.

Light sensors automatically turn your headlights on at dusk or in tunnels; the replacement windscreen must include the sensor bracket.

    What it means

A light sensor is a small optical detector mounted on the windscreen or dashboard that monitors ambient light levels. When light drops below a threshold—at dusk or when entering a tunnel—it triggers your headlights to switch on automatically. This removes the need to manually operate the lights and improves safety by ensuring visibility when conditions darken suddenly. The sensor is typically mounted behind the windscreen's top edge or integrated into the interior mirror housing, where it has an unobstructed view of the sky.

    How to tell

Check your vehicle's handbook or ask your dealer whether your car has automatic headlight control or 'auto lights' as a feature. If equipped, you'll see a symbol on the stalk or dashboard dial marked with a light-bulb icon or 'AUTO' setting. When you select this mode and the ambient light dims, the headlights activate without manual input. Not all cars have this feature; it's typically found on newer or higher-specification models.

    Replacement impact

When replacing a windscreen on a vehicle with a light sensor, the replacement glass must include the correct sensor bracket or mounting point to preserve the auto-headlight function. The sensor itself does not require software calibration—it relies on physical positioning behind the windscreen's upper trim or within the mirror assembly. Ensuring the bracket is correctly installed during the fit is essential; if omitted, the auto-light feature will fail and cannot be restored without additional parts and labour.

About the BMW 2 Series

The BMW 2 Series has evolved through multiple generations since 2014, with windscreen specifications shifting notably as ADAS technology rolled out across the range. Early models carry straightforward laminated windscreens with rain sensors, whilst later variants — particularly from the mid-2010s onwards — introduced integrated camera systems for lane departure warning and related driver assistance features.

From around 2016 onwards, ADAS-equipped 2 Series models feature a front-facing mono camera mounted behind the windscreen, requiring static and dynamic recalibration after glass replacement. Acoustic glass (noise-reduction laminate) is common across the range, and several variants include sensor heated zones to protect camera optics from moisture and frost.

Some BMW 2 Series windscreens carry a camera that may need recalibrating after fitting. Read about ADAS calibration.

Frequently asked questions

The questions customers ask us most often.

You don't need to know. Our online widget asks a few quick questions — make, model, year, and a couple of feature details — to narrow the variant down. Once booked, our parts check team verifies the exact specification against your VIN before the job is dispatched.

Almost always, yes, where a forward-facing camera is fitted. The technicians in our network include ADAS-calibration-certified specialists — we confirm whether your job needs a workshop or can complete on your driveway when we book.

Your replacement glass matches your original factory specification — same size, features and trim fitment as the glass the car left the factory with. It's UK-approved for the road and typically supplied by tier-1 manufacturers like Pilkington, Saint-Gobain, and AGC.

OEM-branded glass (with the vehicle-maker logo) is available on request at a higher price.

Most windscreen replacements happen at your chosen location — home, office, or car park. Some jobs are better suited to a workshop — for example, windscreens with ADAS cameras needing static calibration, or where access to power, shelter, or controlled conditions makes the work safer indoors. We let you know when we confirm your booking.

Most windscreen replacements take 45–90 minutes of the technician's time. ADAS calibration extends the technician's time on the job, but cure time runs in parallel — so it doesn't usually delay when you can drive. Your technician will confirm exact timings on the day.

Most UK comprehensive policies include glass cover, typically with an excess of £75–£100. If your insurer is on our approved list, the specialist you're matched with bills them directly and you just pay the excess.

Otherwise you can pay UK Car Glass directly and claim back from your insurer — our all-inclusive price is often lower than the excess anyway, so paying direct can work out cheaper.

Two years on workmanship defects — water leaks, wind noise, bonding failures — from the date of replacement. If the specialist's work isn't right, we arrange to put it right under the warranty process.

If your model has a front-facing camera (Driving Assistant or Driving Assistant Professional), yes — recalibration is essential. The camera's calibration data is stored in the camera unit itself, and after glass replacement, the system must relearn its baseline through both static and dynamic procedures.

Your specialist will confirm at booking whether your variant needs calibration and whether it's mobile or workshop-based. Dynamic calibration involves a short test drive at controlled speeds; you'll receive a confirmation once it's complete.

Earlier 2 Series models (2014–2015) typically have rain sensors but no integrated camera systems. From 2016 onwards, ADAS-equipped variants introduced front-facing mono cameras for lane departure warning and adaptive cruise — these require recalibration after replacement.

Acoustic glass became more common on later models too. Your quiz will identify your exact generation and feature set so the right glass is matched.

Dynamic calibration is a road-test procedure required on many BMW 2 Series with camera-based ADAS. After the windscreen is fitted and the adhesive has set, the technician drives the vehicle at set speeds on marked roads so the camera can relearn lane lines and traffic references.

This typically takes 7–10 minutes of straight-ahead travel. You'll receive a Check Control message on the dashboard confirming when it's complete. It's a safety-critical step — skipping it means lane-assist and collision warning won't work correctly.

Acoustic glass is fitted to roughly half of the 2 Series variants in our catalogue. It's more common on higher-spec and later models, but not universal across all trims and years. Your variant will be confirmed during the quote process — if acoustic glass is part of your factory spec, your replacement will match it.
