BMW X5 windscreen price, by year

Replacement cost varies significantly with generation and ADAS equipment. Earlier X5 models without camera systems are typically more affordable, whilst later variants equipped with forward-facing mono cameras and integrated rain sensors require ADAS recalibration, which extends technician time and increases overall cost. Solar-control glass, acoustic interlayers, and bracket complexity on newer platforms also influence pricing across the range.

Had to replace the windscreen on our 18 year old car

Had to replace the windscreen on our 18 year old car because it had become dangerous due to thousands of micro chips. The low winter sun made it impossible to see out of. Searching online found UK Car Glass. The price was reasonable and I made an online booking for 2 days later. Unfortunately due to storms a nice lady from the company phoned me and asked if we could postpone fitting for 2 days till the weather cleared which was no problem. The fitter turned up as promised and the job was done within half an hour. Overall a good experience. UK Car Glass appear to be a nationwide company who sub contract to existing windscreen fitting companies. In view of this it may be worthwhile directly contacting a local firm first to check their pricing as it's possible they may be a bit cheaper because their won't be a middleman. However, I've no complaints. Ease of booking, communication etc is excellent.

Very happy with UK car glass

Very happy with UK car glass. They offered the lowest quote and an online booking service. After an initial confirmation email, I heard nothing further for a week, so I called to check that my car was still booked in for a new windscreen. I was informed that it was and they would be in touch to confirm the ETA. The team kept me informed over the weekend, the technician called and updated me again on the day, and arrived when he said he would. The screen was changed efficiently and the technician was polite and helpful. I would use the company again and recommend UK car glass to others.

What to expect during your BMW X5 windscreen replacement

Booking your BMW X5 windscreen replacement takes just minutes, and the process from quote to fitting is straightforward.

  1. 1

Start with our guided online quote — answer a few questions about your X5 (year, trim, features) in under 60 seconds and see the price range instantly.

  2. 2

Complete your booking online in under two minutes, choosing your preferred fitting date and whether you'd like mobile fitting at your address or a workshop appointment.

  3. 3

Our parts team confirms your exact glass variant and any ADAS equipment needed — this includes checking whether your X5 has a forward-facing camera that will require recalibration.

  4. 4

On fitting day, your matched technician arrives with the correct windscreen. If your X5 has a camera system, static calibration is completed after the glass is set and adhesive has begun to cure.

  5. 5

For camera-equipped variants, dynamic calibration (straight-ahead road travel at speed) is carried out to complete ADAS system relearning. The technician confirms your drive-away time and provides aftercare guidance.

  6. 6

You're covered by our two-year warranty on workmanship and glass quality.

The whole job typically completes within a couple of hours, with times varying based on your specific variant and whether ADAS calibration is needed.

Mobile fitting or workshop visit for your X5?

Most X5 windscreen replacements can be fitted at your home or preferred location — mobile fitting is the default. However, if your X5 is equipped with a forward-facing camera (roughly one-quarter of variants), ADAS recalibration is required after the glass is set.

Some of this calibration can be carried out mobile, but static calibration with target boards may require a workshop environment. To keep your ADAS system functioning safely, we schedule the entire job (replacement and any calibration) at one location rather than splitting it across multiple appointments. Your technician will confirm whether a workshop visit is needed when your variant is verified at booking.

We confirm the specific answer for your vehicle when you book.

Dynamic calibration uses road driving to recalibrate your camera after windscreen replacement.

    What it means

Dynamic camera calibration is a procedure in which a technician drives the vehicle on marked roads at set speeds after the windscreen has been fitted and the adhesive has cured. During this drive, the forward-facing camera relearns its reference points — lane markings, road signs, road edges and surrounding traffic patterns — so it can resume accurate operation of camera-dependent safety and driver-assistance systems. This recalibration is necessary because any windscreen replacement, even with precision fitting, can introduce small shifts in the camera's optical alignment relative to the road.

    How to tell

Check your vehicle's handbook or contact your dealer to confirm whether your car has a forward-facing camera system. If it does, ask the dealer whether your specific model requires dynamic (road-drive) or static (target-board) calibration after windscreen replacement. You can also ask your fitter — they will establish this when they look up your vehicle's specification.

    Replacement impact

After your windscreen is fitted and the bonding has cured, a technician will drive the vehicle on marked roads at controlled speeds to allow the camera to relearn its environment. This extends the overall job duration beyond the glass-fitting time alone. Depending on your vehicle, calibration may be performed during the same visit or scheduled separately. We confirm the exact procedure and location (mobile or workshop) when we look up your specific vehicle.

  • Green Sun Strip9
    2000–2026

On the BMW X5: fitted on 9 of the 36 windscreen variants we list (25%); model years 2000–2026.

A green-tinted band at the windscreen's top edge that reduces glare from sunlight above.

    What it means

A green sun strip is a graduated tint band integrated into the windscreen's laminate at the upper edge. It filters intense sunlight and glare from above — particularly useful on motorways and in bright conditions — whilst maintaining clarity through the main viewing area below. The tint is permanent, fused into the laminate layer during manufacture, and cannot be applied or removed afterwards. Sun strips are a windscreen-only feature because they must be built into the laminate during production; side and rear glass cannot carry them as they are typically toughened rather than laminated.

    How to tell

Look at the top edge of your windscreen from the inside. A sun strip appears as a distinct green-tinted gradient band that fades from darker at the very top to clear below. It is visible whether the car is parked or moving. You can also check your vehicle's specification sheet or ask your dealership or current service centre to confirm whether your windscreen includes a sun strip.

    Replacement impact

The replacement windscreen must be the green sun strip variant to match your original. This is not a post-fit addition; it must be ordered as part of the glass itself. Availability is usually straightforward for current and recent models from major manufacturers, though older or less common variants may require a longer lead time. The sun strip does not affect calibration requirements or cure time — it is simply a laminate feature and does not complicate the fitting process.

  • HUD - Head Up Display9
    2006–2026No calibration after replacement

On the BMW X5: fitted on 9 of the 36 windscreen variants we list (25%); model years 2006–2026; no calibration after replacement.

A Head-Up Display projects your speed, navigation cues and key alerts onto the windscreen so you can read them without looking down.

    What it means

A Head-Up Display (HUD) projects driving information — speed, navigation cues, ADAS alerts — onto the windscreen in your line of sight, so you can read it without taking your eyes off the road. The projector is mounted in the dashboard and shines the image upwards onto a special HUD-compatible windscreen that uses a wedge-shaped laminate to prevent a ghost image. Common on premium and sports models, increasingly standard on mid-range cars from the 2020s onwards.

    How to tell

Check your vehicle's specification sheet or handbook under 'display features' or 'HUD'. Look for a small projector unit mounted on the dashboard, typically below the steering wheel or in the instrument cluster area. When you start the vehicle, a bright image should appear on the lower windscreen area. Your dealer's service centre can confirm whether your specific model and trim level includes a HUD.

    Replacement impact

Your replacement windscreen needs to be HUD-compatible — built with the correct wedge laminate so the projected image stays sharp and double-free. Once the HUD-compatible glass is fitted, the projector itself typically doesn't need recalibration: image position is user-adjustable via your dashboard controls. We confirm your vehicle uses the HUD-compatible windscreen variant when ordering, so the replacement matches the original.

  • Light Sensor8
    2006–2019

On the BMW X5: fitted on 8 of the 36 windscreen variants we list (22%); model years 2006–2019.

Light sensors automatically turn your headlights on at dusk or in tunnels; the replacement windscreen must include the sensor bracket.

    What it means

A light sensor is a small optical detector mounted on the windscreen or dashboard that monitors ambient light levels. When light drops below a threshold—at dusk or when entering a tunnel—it triggers your headlights to switch on automatically. This removes the need to manually operate the lights and improves safety by ensuring visibility when conditions darken suddenly. The sensor is typically mounted behind the windscreen's top edge or integrated into the interior mirror housing, where it has an unobstructed view of the sky.

    How to tell

Check your vehicle's handbook or ask your dealer whether your car has automatic headlight control or 'auto lights' as a feature. If equipped, you'll see a symbol on the stalk or dashboard dial marked with a light-bulb icon or 'AUTO' setting. When you select this mode and the ambient light dims, the headlights activate without manual input. Not all cars have this feature; it's typically found on newer or higher-specification models.

    Replacement impact

When replacing a windscreen on a vehicle with a light sensor, the replacement glass must include the correct sensor bracket or mounting point to preserve the auto-headlight function. The sensor itself does not require software calibration—it relies on physical positioning behind the windscreen's upper trim or within the mirror assembly. Ensuring the bracket is correctly installed during the fit is essential; if omitted, the auto-light feature will fail and cannot be restored without additional parts and labour.

  • Mono Camera8
    2010–2026Calibration varies by vehicle

On the BMW X5: fitted on 8 of the 36 windscreen variants we list (22%); model years 2010–2026; calibration varies by vehicle.

A single camera mounted near the rear-view mirror that helps with lane-keeping and collision avoidance.

    What it means

A mono camera is a single-lens camera positioned behind the windscreen, typically in the upper centre area near the rear-view mirror. It captures the road ahead and uses computer vision to detect lane markings, vehicles, and road hazards. The camera feeds data to driver-assistance systems such as lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning. It forms the visual foundation of these safety features, allowing the vehicle to monitor road position and surrounding traffic automatically.

    How to tell

Look in the black trim area above the windscreen, centred behind the rear-view mirror — you will see a small triangular lens assembly or dark lens cover. Check your vehicle handbook or ask your dealer's service department to confirm your model has lane-assistance or collision-warning features; vehicles with these systems almost always have a mono camera. Dashboard warning symbols related to lane or collision systems also indicate the presence of this camera.

    Replacement impact

When the windscreen is replaced, the camera bracket and lens assembly must be removed and carefully repositioned on the new glass. The camera may require calibration after fitting to ensure accurate road detection and lane recognition. Calibration needs vary by vehicle — we confirm the exact procedure when we look up your specific vehicle. The job may take longer than a standard windscreen replacement, and workshop facilities may be required if calibration demands a controlled environment.

  • Clear6
    2000–2019Calibration varies by vehicle

On the BMW X5: fitted on 6 of the 36 windscreen variants we list (17%); model years 2000–2019; calibration varies by vehicle.

Clear windscreen glass has no tint; most cars have a slight tint as standard.

    What it means

A clear windscreen contains no added tint layer. Most modern windscreens incorporate a subtle tint (typically blue, green, grey or bronze) as standard to reduce glare, provide UV protection, and improve cabin comfort. A genuinely clear windscreen is the absence of this tint. Clear glass is less common than tinted variants and is sometimes specified for aesthetic or operational reasons, though the tint difference is usually imperceptible to the naked eye.

    How to tell

Lower your side window halfway and hold a white piece of paper behind it. If you see a noticeable colour cast (blue, green, grey or bronze) in the side glass, your windscreen has the same tint. You can also ask your vehicle's dealership or service centre to confirm the windscreen specification in your service records.

    Replacement impact

Clear windscreen replacement uses the same installation process as any other windscreen. No special calibration or extended cure time applies. Sourcing is straightforward — clear glass is widely available as an aftermarket replacement. Installation time and drive-away restrictions follow standard windscreen replacement timings. If your vehicle has ADAS features (forward-facing camera or radar), calibration may be required after replacement depending on your specific vehicle; we confirm this when we look up your car details.

  • Coating6
    2000–2019

On the BMW X5: fitted on 6 of the 36 windscreen variants we list (17%); model years 2000–2019.

Coated windscreens have a blue or purple tint and protect your car from UV rays and heat.

    What it means

A coated windscreen has a special protective layer applied to the glass that appears as a blue or purple tint and often reflects a silvery-blue colour in bright sunlight. This coating is designed to reduce the amount of ultraviolet (UV) radiation and solar heat that enters the vehicle, helping to keep the interior cooler and protecting upholstery and dashboard components from UV damage and fading. The coating is integral to the glass and doesn't require any special maintenance from you.

    How to tell

Look at your windscreen in bright daylight — a coated windscreen will show a distinct blue or purple tint and a silvery-blue reflection when the sun hits it directly. Check your vehicle's service booklet or window sticker (usually on the driver's door jamb), which may list the glass specification. Alternatively, ask your dealership or service centre to confirm whether your windscreen carries a UV or heat-rejection coating.

    Replacement impact

When replacing a coated windscreen, the replacement glass must match the original specification — including the coating type and tint level — to maintain the same UV and heat protection and to preserve the vehicle's interior aesthetics. Original-equipment or equivalent aftermarket coated glass is sourced to specification. The coating is applied during glass manufacture; no post-fit treatment is required. Fitting and cure times are unaffected by the presence of the coating.

  • Sensor Heated Zone6
    2013–2026Calibration varies by vehicle

On the BMW X5: fitted on 6 of the 36 windscreen variants we list (17%); model years 2013–2026; calibration varies by vehicle.

Heated zones around sensors prevent frost and moisture buildup, helping your safety systems work reliably.

    What it means

A sensor heated zone is an electrical heating element integrated into or around camera, radar, or sensor mounts on the windscreen. Its purpose is to prevent frost, ice, condensation, and moisture accumulation on sensor lenses and housings. This keeps safety systems — such as lane-keeping assist, collision warning, and adaptive cruise control — functioning accurately in cold, wet, or foggy conditions. Without this heating, moisture or ice can obscure sensors and cause them to malfunction or deactivate.

    How to tell

Check your vehicle's handbook for mention of 'heated sensor zone' or 'sensor heating' in the windscreen or ADAS section. Look at the top edge of your windscreen where cameras or radar modules are mounted — you may see small heating elements or wiring near these components. Ask your dealership or service centre directly: they can confirm whether your specific model includes sensor heating as standard.

    Replacement impact

Windscreens with heated sensor zones require careful handling during replacement to preserve the heating element and its electrical connections. The heating circuit must be reconnected properly after the new glass is fitted. Depending on the vehicle, this may involve static or dynamic camera calibration after installation. We confirm the exact procedure — including any calibration needs — when we look up your vehicle details.

  • Grey Sun Strip4
    2006–2019

On the BMW X5: fitted on 4 of the 36 windscreen variants we list (11%); model years 2006–2019.

A grey-tinted band across the top of your windscreen that reduces glare from sunlight and reflections above.

    What it means

A grey sun strip is a tinted gradient band built into the top edge of the windscreen during manufacture. It sits within the laminated glass layers and gradually fades from opaque grey at the very top to clear further down. The strip is designed to reduce glare and reflections from sunlight, street lights, and oncoming headlights, improving comfort and visibility for the driver without obstructing the view of traffic signals or overhead hazards. Sun strips are a factory-applied feature unique to windscreens—they cannot be added to side or rear glass because those are typically toughened rather than laminated.

    How to tell

Look at the top of your windscreen from inside the vehicle. You will see a grey-tinted band that fades to clear glass. The tint is gradual and integral to the glass itself, not a removable film or coating. Your vehicle's service records or handbook may also list it as a standard feature. If unsure, ask your dealer or service centre whether your specific model includes a sun strip.

    Replacement impact

When replacing a windscreen with a sun strip, the replacement glass must be sourced in the exact matching variant—including the sun-strip tint and fade profile. Aftermarket and OE glass are both available for most vehicles, but the variant must be correct to match your original. There is no calibration required for the sun strip itself. If your windscreen also carries camera or sensor features, those will be calibrated separately according to your vehicle's needs.

  • Heat Absorbing PVB4
    2013–2019

On the BMW X5: fitted on 4 of the 36 windscreen variants we list (11%); model years 2013–2019.

Heat-absorbing PVB interlayer reduces solar gain and cabin temperature on warm days—but must match your original spec.

    What it means

Heat-absorbing PVB is a specially formulated interlayer sandwiched between the glass plies in your windscreen. It absorbs a portion of the sun's infrared radiation before it enters the cabin, reducing solar heat gain on warm days. This keeps the interior cooler and reduces air-conditioning workload. The feature is built into the glass during manufacture and cannot be added or removed after production. If your vehicle left the factory with this interlayer, any replacement windscreen must carry the same PVB specification to maintain the original thermal performance.

    How to tell

Check your vehicle's specification sheet or handbook—heat-absorbing PVB is listed under windscreen or glass specification. You can also ask your dealership service centre or provide us with your vehicle registration; we'll confirm whether your car came with this feature as standard or as an option.

    Replacement impact

Replacement windscreens with heat-absorbing PVB must be sourced to the exact OE specification—aftermarket alternatives with standard PVB will not deliver the same solar-control performance. We ensure the correct spec is ordered before the fit. No calibration is required. Installation and cure procedures are identical to standard windscreen replacement; the interlayer is integral to the glass and requires no additional treatment.

  • Triple Camera1
    2018–2026Calibration varies by vehicle

On the BMW X5: fitted on 1 of the 36 windscreen variants we list (3%); model years 2018–2026; calibration varies by vehicle.

Three forward-facing cameras mounted behind the windscreen provide multi-range vision for advanced driver assistance.

    What it means

A triple-camera system is a forward-sensing array consisting of three separate camera modules positioned behind the windscreen, typically mounted around the rear-view mirror area. Each camera has a different focal length — narrow, main, and wide — allowing the system to monitor the road at different distances simultaneously. This multi-camera approach enables advanced driver assistance features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, collision avoidance, and traffic sign recognition to operate more reliably across a wider field of view and range than a single camera could achieve. The system is a core component of modern vehicle safety and autonomous driving capability.

    How to tell

Look at the windscreen around the rear-view mirror area — you'll see three distinct triangular shapes printed in the black frit (the opaque band around the glass edge). These are the camera housings. Alternatively, check your vehicle documentation or ask your dealer's service centre; they can confirm whether your model is equipped with triple-camera vision.

    Replacement impact

Triple-camera systems require a precision-engineered bracket and a specifically printed glass variant to align the three optical centres correctly. After windscreen replacement, the camera system may require static or dynamic calibration depending on your vehicle's design — we confirm the exact calibration procedure when we look up your specific vehicle. The replacement glass must be OEM or OEM-equivalent to ensure optical accuracy and system functionality. Calibration restores the cameras' ability to detect road hazards and maintain driver assistance feature performance.

About the BMW X5

The BMW X5 has been in continuous production since 1999, evolving through multiple generations and establishing itself as BMW's flagship premium SUV. Windscreen specifications have shifted significantly across these generations, reflecting BMW's advancing ADAS philosophy.

Earlier X5 models (early 2000s–2010s) carried straightforward laminated windscreens with basic rain sensors. From the mid-2010s onwards, particularly across the F15 and G05 platforms, the X5 moved towards camera-integrated systems paired with the Driving Assistant and Driving Assistant Professional suites, introducing forward-facing mono cameras mounted to the windscreen bracket.

The windscreen is now a critical ADAS component on most modern X5 variants. Acoustic glass is standard across the range, and many models carry solar-control or heat-absorbing PVB interlayers to manage cabin temperature in this premium segment. Any replacement requires careful matching of these specifications, and camera-equipped variants mandate ADAS recalibration after fitting.

Frequently asked questions

The questions customers ask us most often.

You don't need to know. Our online widget asks a few quick questions — make, model, year, and a couple of feature details — to narrow the variant down. Once booked, our parts check team verifies the exact specification against your VIN before the job is dispatched.

Almost always, yes, where a forward-facing camera is fitted. The technicians in our network include ADAS-calibration-certified specialists — we confirm whether your job needs a workshop or can complete on your driveway when we book.

Your replacement glass matches your original factory specification — same size, features and trim fitment as the glass the car left the factory with. It's UK-approved for the road and typically supplied by tier-1 manufacturers like Pilkington, Saint-Gobain, and AGC.

OEM-branded glass (with the vehicle-maker logo) is available on request at a higher price.

Most windscreen replacements happen at your chosen location — home, office, or car park. Some jobs are better suited to a workshop — for example, windscreens with ADAS cameras needing static calibration, or where access to power, shelter, or controlled conditions makes the work safer indoors. We let you know when we confirm your booking.

Most windscreen replacements take 45–90 minutes of the technician's time. ADAS calibration extends the technician's time on the job, but cure time runs in parallel — so it doesn't usually delay when you can drive. Your technician will confirm exact timings on the day.

Most UK comprehensive policies include glass cover, typically with an excess of £75–£100. If your insurer is on our approved list, the specialist you're matched with bills them directly and you just pay the excess.

Otherwise you can pay UK Car Glass directly and claim back from your insurer — our all-inclusive price is often lower than the excess anyway, so paying direct can work out cheaper.

Two years on workmanship defects — water leaks, wind noise, bonding failures — from the date of replacement. If the specialist's work isn't right, we arrange to put it right under the warranty process.

Only if your X5 is equipped with a forward-facing camera system for lane departure warning or similar driver assistance features. This applies to models with the Driving Assistant or Driving Assistant Professional packages — roughly one-quarter of X5 variants in our catalogue. The technician will check this during your quote; if calibration is needed, it's completed as part of the same appointment (static calibration after the glass is set, followed by dynamic calibration on the road).

Mobile fitting at your address or workplace is our default and is available for most X5 models. If your X5 has a camera-based ADAS system requiring static calibration with target boards, we'll schedule the job at a workshop instead — this gives us the controlled environment needed to complete both replacement and calibration safely. Either way, the job is booked as one appointment, not split across locations.

Acoustic (noise-reducing) glass is standard on most modern X5 variants — nearly all recent generation models come with it as factory-fitted laminated PVB. Solar-control glass (which absorbs infrared heat) is fitted to roughly half of X5 variants, typically higher-specification or newer models. Your exact specification is confirmed during the quote, and your replacement is matched precisely to your original.

Your technician's fitting time is typically 45–90 minutes, depending on your specific model and whether the windscreen carries a camera bracket. For camera-equipped X5s, static calibration is completed after the glass is set whilst the adhesive cures — this doesn't extend your minimum drive-away time because calibration runs in parallel with bonding. Dynamic recalibration (if needed) is carried out on the road afterwards, but the overall job typically completes within a couple of hours.
