Land Rover Defender rear window price, by year

Prices vary depending on generation, trim level, and integrated features. Earlier-model Defenders with simple toughened rear glass are typically the most affordable to replace. Later variants with integrated brake-light circuits, antenna elements, or solar-control coating carry higher replacement costs due to the complexity of matching those factory specifications and reconnecting electrical components correctly.

Installation fine, wide range of prices

The actual installation of the glass was fine and got a booking relatively quick. However, the fitter informed me after the job that I should replace the rubber seal around the glass...not much use after the job and would have donet his had I know. I checked the website to see if I missed something (partially went through booking process) and saw that if I had the windscreen done the next day it would have been £200 cheaper. Not a great discovery.

What to expect during your Land Rover Defender rear window replacement

Rear-window replacement on your Defender follows a straightforward process from quote to finish.

  1. 1

Complete a quick online quiz to identify your exact Defender variant — generation, trim, and installed features.

  2. 2

Receive an instant quote with a transparent breakdown of your costs.

  3. 3

Once booked, our parts-check team confirms your replacement glass matches your factory specification, including any integrated elements.

  4. 4

A technician near you is matched to your job and visits at your chosen time — mobile at your address or at a workshop.

  5. 5

The fitting typically takes 30–60 minutes of the technician's time. Your fitter will remove as much broken glass as they can reach, but small shards can lodge in places that need deeper access, so a professional valet afterwards is recommended.

  6. 6

You'll receive a two-year warranty covering workmanship and glass quality.

Book your Defender rear-window replacement through UK Car Glass and drive away with confidence.

Mobile fitting or workshop visit for your Defender?

Most Defender rear-window replacements can be carried out mobile at your address. However, if your Defender is equipped with integrated antenna elements in the rear glass — common on certain LR3, LR4, and newer Range Rover Defender variants — your technician may need workshop access to properly test the radio connection after fitting.

Otherwise, you can choose mobile fitting at home or a workshop appointment based on your preference and the technician's availability in your area.

  • Heated Rear Windscreen5
    1983–2026

On the Land Rover Defender: fitted on every one of the 5 rear window variants we list; model years 1983–2026.

Heated rear windscreen with integrated wires clears mist and ice when you switch on the demister.

    What it means

A heated rear windscreen contains fine heating wires embedded within the glass. When you activate the rear demister, an electrical current passes through these wires, warming the glass and melting ice or condensation. This feature is particularly useful in cold or damp weather, improving rear visibility quickly. The heating grid is integral to the glass and connected to your vehicle's electrical circuit via connectors at the base of the windscreen.

    How to tell

Look at the rear windscreen from inside the vehicle — you will see a fine grid of horizontal lines across the glass, typically bronze or copper in colour. On the dashboard or steering wheel stalk, there will be a dedicated rear-demist button, usually marked with a windscreen symbol and heating lines. If in doubt, ask your vehicle's service centre or consult your handbook.

    Replacement impact

Replacement rear windscreens with heated grids are widely available as original-equipment aftermarket or dealership parts. The new glass must include the factory heating grid and electrical connectors intact. The technician will reconnect the heating circuit to your vehicle's rear-demist switch. Heated rear windscreens are bonded glass, so adhesive cure time applies; drive-away time will be confirmed by the fitter on the day.

  • Green4
    1983–2026

On the Land Rover Defender: fitted on 4 of the 5 rear window variants we list (80%); model years 1983–2026.

    What it means

Most Defender rear windows carry a subtle green tint, which is hard to see but important for UV protection and matching your original glass.

    On your Land Rover Defender

Confirmed during your quote. The exact shade varies by generation and trim — our parts-check team will match it to your vehicle's specification.

  • Brake Light2
    1983–2026

On the Land Rover Defender: fitted on 2 of the 5 rear window variants we list (40%); model years 1983–2026.

    What it means

A high-level brake light integrated into the rear window via silkscreen or wiring. The replacement glass must carry the same pattern so your vehicle's lighting circuit reconnects cleanly.

    On your Land Rover Defender

Common on mid-range and higher trims from the 2010s onwards. Confirmed during the quote and verified before your replacement is fitted.

  • Solar Control2
    2020–2026

On the Land Rover Defender: fitted on 2 of the 5 rear window variants we list (40%); model years 2020–2026.

    What it means

A solar-coated glass that absorbs the Sun's infrared rays, reducing cabin heat and UV exposure — a premium comfort feature.

    On your Land Rover Defender

Typically offered on higher trims or as an optional specification on newer Defenders. Confirmed during your quote.

  • Grey Privacy1
    2021–2026

On the Land Rover Defender: fitted on 1 of the 5 rear window variants we list (20%); model years 2021–2026.

Dark grey tint on rear windows provides privacy and reduces interior heat and glare.

    What it means

Dark grey tint, formally known as privacy glass, is a factory-applied tint created through a deep-dipping process during glass manufacture. The pigment is infused into the inner surface of the glass, darkening the rear windows (and sometimes rear doors) significantly more than the front. This reduces heat transmission, minimises glare, and obscures the interior from outside view. It's standard on the rear half of many modern vehicles.

    How to tell

Compare the rear side windows and rear window (backlight) to the front side windows — the rear glass will be noticeably darker. Check your vehicle documents or ask your dealership service centre if you're unsure whether your car left the factory with privacy glass.

    Replacement impact

Dark grey tinted glass must be sourced from the Original Equipment Equivalent (OEE) or dealership to ensure colour and transmission match your vehicle's existing rear glass. The tint is integral to the glass itself, not a surface coating, so aftermarket non-tinted glass will look visibly mismatched. Replacement does not require any calibration and follows standard bonded-glass cure times for rear windows.

About the Land Rover Defender

The Land Rover Defender has been in continuous production since 1983, evolving through several distinct generations and body styles. Modern variants are more likely to feature tinted glass and integrated electrical elements than earlier models.

From the mid-2010s onwards, newer Defenders increasingly incorporate integrated features such as brake-light patterns in the rear window and solar-control glass on certain trims. Some models also carry antenna elements built into the rear glass itself, which must be correctly reconnected during replacement to preserve radio functionality.

While most Defenders don't require ADAS calibration for rear-window replacement, matching your factory specification — including any integrated electrical or tinting details — is essential for a seamless fit and proper function.
