Had to replace the windscreen on our 18 year old car

Had to replace the windscreen on our 18 year old car because it had become dangerous due to thousands of micro chips. The low winter sun made it impossible to see out of. Searching online found UK Car Glass. The price was reasonable and I made an online booking for 2 days later. Unfortunately due to storms a nice lady from the company phoned me and asked if we could postpone fitting for 2 days till the weather cleared which was no problem. The fitter turned up as promised and the job was done within half an hour. Overall a good experience. UK Car Glass appear to be a nationwide company who sub contract to existing windscreen fitting companies. In view of this it may be worthwhile directly contacting a local firm first to check their pricing as it's possible they may be a bit cheaper because their won't be a middleman. However, I've no complaints. Ease of booking, communication etc is excellent.

More professional than autoglass

Polite, prompt and efficient. Contacted Uk Car Glass and autoglass for quotes, autoglass were suppose to call with in a window and they didn’t, by the time they contacted me the job had been done.

Very happy with UK car glass

Very happy with UK car glass. They offered the lowest quote and an online booking service. After an initial confirmation email, I heard nothing further for a week, so I called to check that my car was still booked in for a new windscreen. I was informed that it was and they would be in touch to confirm the ETA. The team kept me informed over the weekend, the technician called and updated me again on the day, and arrived when he said he would. The screen was changed efficiently and the technician was polite and helpful. I would use the company again and recommend UK car glass to others.

Your fitter confirms the drive-away time before you leave. Enjoy your replacement glass backed by our two-year warranty.

  6. 6

If you ever need a warranty inspection or claim, contact us with photos and we'll guide you through the process.

Every job comes with two years' peace of mind and support from UKCG.

Mobile fitting or workshop visit for your X Class?

Most X Class windscreen replacements can be carried out at your home or workplace as a mobile service. However, if your model includes driver assistance systems with a forward-facing camera, static camera calibration is required after fitting.

This calibration must be done indoors at a workshop using printed target boards placed at precise distances — it cannot be completed on a driveway. When calibration is needed, your entire job (replacement and calibration) is scheduled at the workshop to ensure the safety-critical alignment is properly completed and documented.

We confirm the specific answer for your vehicle when you book.

  • Bracket For Safety Features2
    2017–2026Calibration varies by vehicle

On the Mercedes X Class: fitted on 2 of the 3 windscreen variants we list (67%); model years 2017–2026; calibration varies by vehicle.

The moulded trim that surrounds your camera and sensor cluster at the top of the windscreen, typically transferred or supplied with replacement glass.

    What it means

A bracket for safety features is the moulded plastic or composite shroud that sits at the top of the windscreen, framing and protecting the camera and sensor cluster mounted behind the rear-view mirror. This trim cover houses forward-facing driver-assistance cameras and sensors — equipment that monitors the road ahead for lane-keeping, collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and similar safety functions. The bracket itself is part of the vehicle's structural frame, but the trim cover you see is what protects and aesthetically integrates the technology into the windscreen area.

    How to tell

Look at the top centre of your windscreen, just above or around the rear-view mirror. If you see a dark moulded shroud or trim panel — often rectangular or tapered — with a visible lens or sensor window, your vehicle has a bracket for safety features. Your service history or handbook will list any ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System) technologies fitted. Ask your dealer or service centre if your vehicle has forward-facing cameras or sensors; if it does, you have a bracket for safety features.

    Replacement impact

On windscreen replacement, the trim cover is typically transferred from your old glass to the new one, or supplied pre-integrated with the replacement depending on the variant. This means minimal disruption to your safety system during the swap. However, if the bracket requires recalibration after glass replacement — which depends on your specific vehicle and camera type — the job may require static calibration (using a target board) or dynamic calibration (a road drive). We confirm the exact calibration procedure when we look up your vehicle.

  • Camera2
    2017–2026Calibration varies by vehicle

On the Mercedes X Class: fitted on 2 of the 3 windscreen variants we list (67%); model years 2017–2026; calibration varies by vehicle.

    What it means

A forward-facing camera mounted behind the windscreen that feeds data to your driver assistance systems for lane-keeping, collision warning, and sign recognition.

    On your Mercedes X Class

Found on X Class models from 2022 onwards fitted with the Driver Assistance Package; confirmed during the quote.

  • Mono Camera2
    2017–2026Calibration varies by vehicle

On the Mercedes X Class: fitted on 2 of the 3 windscreen variants we list (67%); model years 2017–2026; calibration varies by vehicle.

A single camera mounted near the rear-view mirror that helps with lane-keeping and collision avoidance.

    What it means

A mono camera is a single-lens camera positioned behind the windscreen, typically in the upper centre area near the rear-view mirror. It captures the road ahead and uses computer vision to detect lane markings, vehicles, and road hazards. The camera feeds data to driver-assistance systems such as lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning. It forms the visual foundation of these safety features, allowing the vehicle to monitor road position and surrounding traffic automatically.

    How to tell

Look in the black trim area above the windscreen, centred behind the rear-view mirror — you will see a small triangular lens assembly or dark lens cover. Check your vehicle handbook or ask your dealer's service department to confirm your model has lane-assistance or collision-warning features; vehicles with these systems almost always have a mono camera. Dashboard warning symbols related to lane or collision systems also indicate the presence of this camera.

    Replacement impact

When the windscreen is replaced, the camera bracket and lens assembly must be removed and carefully repositioned on the new glass. The camera may require calibration after fitting to ensure accurate road detection and lane recognition. Calibration needs vary by vehicle — we confirm the exact procedure when we look up your specific vehicle. The job may take longer than a standard windscreen replacement, and workshop facilities may be required if calibration demands a controlled environment.

  • Rain Sensor2
    2017–2026No calibration after replacement

On the Mercedes X Class: fitted on 2 of the 3 windscreen variants we list (67%); model years 2017–2026; no calibration after replacement.

    What it means

An optical sensor bonded to the windscreen that detects rainfall and triggers automatic wiper activation.

    On your Mercedes X Class

Standard on newer X Class variants from around 2020 onwards; if your wipers auto-activate in rain, you have one fitted.

  • Static Camera Calibration Process2
    2017–2026Static calibration required

On the Mercedes X Class: fitted on 2 of the 3 windscreen variants we list (67%); model years 2017–2026; static calibration required.

    What it means

A precision realignment procedure for your forward-facing camera using stationary target boards in a controlled workshop environment, required after windscreen replacement on ADAS-equipped models.

    On your Mercedes X Class

Required on X Class models from 2022 onwards with driver assistance features; your specialist will arrange this as part of the booking.

About the Mercedes X Class

The Mercedes X Class is a mid-size pickup truck produced from 2017 onwards, designed for both work and leisure use. All X Class windscreens feature acoustic laminated glass with a green tint and VIN notch as standard, reducing cabin noise and glare on every variant.

From 2022 onwards, many X Class models gained driver assistance features including optional camera systems and rain sensors paired with the Driver Assistance Package. These models require static camera calibration after windscreen replacement — a specialised procedure carried out indoors using target boards to realign the forward-facing camera system.

Frequently asked questions

The questions customers ask us most often.

You don't need to know. Our online widget asks a few quick questions — make, model, year, and a couple of feature details — to narrow the variant down. Once booked, our parts check team verifies the exact specification against your VIN before the job is dispatched.

Almost always, yes, where a forward-facing camera is fitted. The technicians in our network include ADAS-calibration-certified specialists — we confirm whether your job needs a workshop or can complete on your driveway when we book.

Your replacement glass matches your original factory specification — same size, features and trim fitment as the glass the car left the factory with. It's UK-approved for the road and typically supplied by tier-1 manufacturers like Pilkington, Saint-Gobain, and AGC.

OEM-branded glass (with the vehicle-maker logo) is available on request at a higher price.

Most windscreen replacements happen at your chosen location — home, office, or car park. Some jobs are better suited to a workshop — for example, windscreens with ADAS cameras needing static calibration, or where access to power, shelter, or controlled conditions makes the work safer indoors. We let you know when we confirm your booking.

Most windscreen replacements take 45–90 minutes of the technician's time. ADAS calibration extends the technician's time on the job, but cure time runs in parallel — so it doesn't usually delay when you can drive. Your technician will confirm exact timings on the day.

Most UK comprehensive policies include glass cover, typically with an excess of £75–£100. If your insurer is on our approved list, the specialist you're matched with bills them directly and you just pay the excess.

Otherwise you can pay UK Car Glass directly and claim back from your insurer — our all-inclusive price is often lower than the excess anyway, so paying direct can work out cheaper.

Two years on workmanship defects — water leaks, wind noise, bonding failures — from the date of replacement. If the specialist's work isn't right, we arrange to put it right under the warranty process.

If your X Class was built from 2022 onwards and includes driver assistance features like lane-keeping assist or collision warning, it has a forward-facing camera that requires static calibration after windscreen replacement. Your specialist will confirm this during the quote and arrange a workshop slot if needed.

Calibration takes place indoors using target boards and diagnostic equipment to realign the camera to factory precision. This happens the same day as the glass replacement, so you don't need two separate visits.

Mercedes-Benz driver assistance systems are tightly integrated between the forward camera and radar sensors. After a windscreen replacement, the camera must be realigned to exact factory specifications to ensure lane-keeping, collision detection, and other safety features work reliably.

Static calibration is the Mercedes-approved method — it's done in a workshop with the vehicle stationary and target boards positioned at precise heights and distances. Your technician uses a diagnostic tool to confirm the camera is correctly aligned before you drive away.

Yes. All X Class windscreens carry acoustic laminated glass as standard across every variant from 2017 onwards. This reduces cabin noise and is part of the factory specification your replacement will match.

Earlier X Class models without driver assistance features do not require calibration after windscreen replacement. If your X Class was built before 2022 and does not have camera or rain-sensor options fitted, the job is straightforward glass replacement with no specialist post-fit procedure needed.
