Mercedes SL windscreen price, by year

Replacement costs vary significantly based on generation and specification level. Earlier SL models without driver-assistance cameras tend to be more affordable, whilst newer variants equipped with the Driver Assistance Package and integrated camera systems incur higher costs due to the mandatory post-replacement calibration process. Solar-control and acoustic windscreen options, where fitted, also influence pricing.

Had to replace the windscreen on our 18 year old car

Had to replace the windscreen on our 18 year old car because it had become dangerous due to thousands of micro chips. The low winter sun made it impossible to see out of. Searching online found UK Car Glass. The price was reasonable and I made an online booking for 2 days later. Unfortunately due to storms a nice lady from the company phoned me and asked if we could postpone fitting for 2 days till the weather cleared which was no problem. The fitter turned up as promised and the job was done within half an hour. Overall a good experience. UK Car Glass appear to be a nationwide company who sub contract to existing windscreen fitting companies. In view of this it may be worthwhile directly contacting a local firm first to check their pricing as it's possible they may be a bit cheaper because their won't be a middleman. However, I've no complaints. Ease of booking, communication etc is excellent.

More professional than autoglass

Polite, prompt and efficient. Contacted Uk Car Glass and autoglass for quotes, autoglass were suppose to call with in a window and they didn’t, by the time they contacted me the job had been done.

Very happy with UK car glass

Very happy with UK car glass. They offered the lowest quote and an online booking service. After an initial confirmation email, I heard nothing further for a week, so I called to check that my car was still booked in for a new windscreen. I was informed that it was and they would be in touch to confirm the ETA. The team kept me informed over the weekend, the technician called and updated me again on the day, and arrived when he said he would. The screen was changed efficiently and the technician was polite and helpful. I would use the company again and recommend UK car glass to others.

What to expect during your Mercedes SL windscreen replacement

Booking your SL windscreen replacement takes just minutes, and the process from quote to fitting is straightforward.

  1. 1

Answer a quick online quiz about your SL's year, trim, and features — takes about a minute.

  2. 2

Receive an instant quote and choose your fitting date (mobile at home or at a workshop).

  3. 3

A specialist from our network is matched to your job based on location and your SL's specific requirements.

  4. 4

On fitting day, if your SL has camera-based driver assistance, the specialist will complete static calibration at a workshop location to ensure safety systems are properly aligned.

  5. 5

Your fitter confirms the minimum drive-away time before you leave, based on the adhesive used and ambient conditions.

  6. 6

Two-year warranty on the replacement covers workmanship and glass defects — claim through UKCG if any issues arise.

Throughout the process, our network handles the technical detail so you can focus on getting back on the road safely.

Mobile fitting or workshop visit for your SL?

Most SL replacements can be arranged as mobile fittings at your home or workplace for convenience. However, if your SL is equipped with the Driver Assistance Package and front windscreen camera — typically found on 2022+ models — static calibration is required after the glass is fitted.

This calibration demands a workshop environment with target boards and diagnostic equipment to ensure the camera and steering-angle sensor are properly aligned with Mercedes factory specifications. In these cases, the entire job (replacement and calibration) is scheduled at a workshop location to keep the process seamless and ensure safety systems function correctly.

  • Antenna2
    2002–2012

On the Mercedes SL: fitted on every one of the 2 windscreen variants we list; model years 2002–2012.

An aerial laminated into the windscreen or rear window restores radio, DAB or TV reception without a roof-mounted mast.

    What it means

An antenna is a conductive print laminated into the glass during manufacture, typically used for radio, DAB (digital audio broadcasting) or television reception. It replaces the traditional roof-mounted aerial mast found on older vehicles. The antenna is integrated into the glass interlayer and connected to the vehicle's receiver unit via a connector embedded in the glass edge. This design offers a cleaner aesthetic, reduces wind noise, and eliminates the vulnerability of a protruding mast to damage or theft.

    How to tell

Check your vehicle's roof — if there is no visible aerial mast, your car likely has a laminated antenna. You can also ask your dealer or service centre whether your windscreen or rear window carries an antenna print. The connector may be visible on the glass edge or inside the door frame trim.

    Replacement impact

When replacing glass with a laminated antenna, the replacement must carry the matching antenna print and connector to restore reception immediately on fitting. Aftermarket or original-equipment glass with the correct antenna specification is essential; a plain replacement will leave you without radio or DAB signal. Our fitters verify the antenna specification during booking and source the correct variant before the appointment.

  • Green2
    2002–2012

On the Mercedes SL: fitted on every one of the 2 windscreen variants we list; model years 2002–2012.

    What it means

A subtle green tint laminated into the glass that reduces glare and UV transmission — virtually all modern windscreens carry this as standard.

    On your Mercedes SL

Universal on all SL variants; very subtle and confirmed during the quote.

  • Heated Windscreen2
    2002–2012

On the Mercedes SL: fitted on every one of the 2 windscreen variants we list; model years 2002–2012.

    What it means

A mesh of thin wires laminated into the glass that heat up to clear frost, mist, and condensation quickly — standard on all SL models.

    On your Mercedes SL

Confirmed during the quote process and present across all active SL variants in our catalogue.

  • Rain Sensor2
    2002–2012No calibration after replacement

On the Mercedes SL: fitted on every one of the 2 windscreen variants we list; model years 2002–2012; no calibration after replacement.

    What it means

An infrared sensor that detects rainfall and automatically triggers the wipers, improving driver convenience and safety in wet conditions.

    On your Mercedes SL

Standard fitment on all modern SL models; confirmed during the quote.

  • Solar Control2
    2002–2012

On the Mercedes SL: fitted on every one of the 2 windscreen variants we list; model years 2002–2012.

    What it means

A special infrared-absorbing coating that reduces solar heat entering the cabin, improving air-conditioning efficiency and interior comfort in sunny conditions.

    On your Mercedes SL

Typically fitted to higher-specification SL trims; confirmed during the quote.

  • TV Antenna2
    2002–2012

On the Mercedes SL: fitted on every one of the 2 windscreen variants we list; model years 2002–2012.

A TV-reception aerial printed into the rear window, typically for in-car entertainment systems.

    What it means

A TV antenna is an aerial pattern laminated into the rear windscreen or rear side window to receive broadcast television signals. It's a separate system from the vehicle's radio or mobile antenna and is typically found in vehicles equipped with rear-seat entertainment systems. The antenna is printed directly onto or into the glass during manufacture, so when the glass is replaced, the antenna pattern must be reproduced on the replacement to maintain reception quality.

    How to tell

Check your vehicle's specification sheet or handbook for rear-seat entertainment or TV tuner capability. If your car has a rear-seat entertainment system with a TV tuner, the rear window will have a TV antenna. You can also ask your dealer or service centre to confirm whether your vehicle has this feature.

    Replacement impact

When the rear window is replaced, the replacement glass must include the matching TV antenna print to preserve reception. OEM (original equipment manufacturer) glass is typically required to ensure the antenna pattern is identical. The antenna is passive and requires no calibration or specialist procedures after fitting. Cure time for bonded rear glass is required; the fitter will confirm the drive-away time on the day.

  • Vin Notch2
    2002–2012

On the Mercedes SL: fitted on every one of the 2 windscreen variants we list; model years 2002–2012.

A printed VIN reference box along the bottom edge of your windscreen helps identify your vehicle's chassis number at a glance.

    What it means

A VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) notch is a small printed or etched box positioned along the lower edge of the windscreen that displays your vehicle's chassis number. This reference marking is a manufacturing and administrative feature, allowing quick visual identification of the vehicle without needing to consult documents. It's particularly useful for service records, insurance claims, and vehicle registration purposes. The notch itself doesn't affect the structural integrity or safety performance of the glass.

    How to tell

Look along the bottom edge of your windscreen — typically in one of the lower corners — for a small rectangular box containing printed digits or characters. If you're uncertain, check your vehicle's service handbook or ask your dealership or service centre to confirm whether your model includes this feature.

    Replacement impact

When your windscreen is replaced, the new glass will retain the VIN notch printed or etched by the manufacturer. This is a standard feature on replacement windscreens for compatible vehicles and requires no additional work or adjustment. The notch does not affect glass fitting, cure time, or any post-replacement calibration procedures.

  • Grey Sun Strip1
    2002–2005

On the Mercedes SL: fitted on 1 of the 2 windscreen variants we list (50%); model years 2002–2005.

A grey-tinted band across the top of your windscreen that reduces glare from sunlight and reflections above.

    What it means

A grey sun strip is a tinted gradient band built into the top edge of the windscreen during manufacture. It sits within the laminated glass layers and gradually fades from opaque grey at the very top to clear further down. The strip is designed to reduce glare and reflections from sunlight, street lights, and oncoming headlights, improving comfort and visibility for the driver without obstructing the view of traffic signals or overhead hazards. Sun strips are a factory-applied feature unique to windscreens—they cannot be added to side or rear glass because those are typically toughened rather than laminated.

    How to tell

Look at the top of your windscreen from inside the vehicle. You will see a grey-tinted band that fades to clear glass. The tint is gradual and integral to the glass itself, not a removable film or coating. Your vehicle's service records or handbook may also list it as a standard feature. If unsure, ask your dealer or service centre whether your specific model includes a sun strip.

    Replacement impact

When replacing a windscreen with a sun strip, the replacement glass must be sourced in the exact matching variant—including the sun-strip tint and fade profile. Aftermarket and OE glass are both available for most vehicles, but the variant must be correct to match your original. There is no calibration required for the sun strip itself. If your windscreen also carries camera or sensor features, those will be calibrated separately according to your vehicle's needs.

About the Mercedes SL

The Mercedes-Benz SL has evolved through multiple generations since its modern relaunch in the early 2000s, with each iteration bringing incremental advances to its windscreen specification. Earlier SL models carry straightforward laminated windscreens with rain sensors and heated elements, whilst later variants from the mid-2010s onwards feature integrated antenna elements and solar-control coatings to enhance comfort and in-car reception.

From approximately 2022 onwards, newer SL variants began incorporating front windscreen-mounted camera systems as part of Mercedes' Driver Assistance Package suite — introducing lane-keeping assist, collision warning, and traffic-sign recognition. These camera-equipped models require static calibration after windscreen replacement, a specialised procedure that ensures steering angle and front-camera alignment meets original factory specifications.

Frequently asked questions

The questions customers ask us most often.

You don't need to know. Our online widget asks a few quick questions — make, model, year, and a couple of feature details — to narrow the variant down. Once booked, our parts check team verifies the exact specification against your VIN before the job is dispatched.

Almost always, yes, where a forward-facing camera is fitted. The technicians in our network include ADAS-calibration-certified specialists — we confirm whether your job needs a workshop or can complete on your driveway when we book.

Your replacement glass matches your original factory specification — same size, features and trim fitment as the glass the car left the factory with. It's UK-approved for the road and typically supplied by tier-1 manufacturers like Pilkington, Saint-Gobain, and AGC.

OEM-branded glass (with the vehicle-maker logo) is available on request at a higher price.

Most windscreen replacements happen at your chosen location — home, office, or car park. Some jobs are better suited to a workshop — for example, windscreens with ADAS cameras needing static calibration, or where access to power, shelter, or controlled conditions makes the work safer indoors. We let you know when we confirm your booking.

Most windscreen replacements take 45–90 minutes of the technician's time. ADAS calibration extends the technician's time on the job, but cure time runs in parallel — so it doesn't usually delay when you can drive. Your technician will confirm exact timings on the day.

Most UK comprehensive policies include glass cover, typically with an excess of £75–£100. If your insurer is on our approved list, the specialist you're matched with bills them directly and you just pay the excess.

Otherwise you can pay UK Car Glass directly and claim back from your insurer — our all-inclusive price is often lower than the excess anyway, so paying direct can work out cheaper.

Two years on workmanship defects — water leaks, wind noise, bonding failures — from the date of replacement. If the specialist's work isn't right, we arrange to put it right under the warranty process.

Yes, if your SL is equipped with the Driver Assistance Package (typically from 2022 onwards), the front windscreen camera requires static calibration after replacement. This ensures lane-keeping assist, collision warning, and other driver-assistance functions work safely and accurately.

Calibration is handled by the specialist you're matched with and is included in the service — it doesn't extend your drive-away time because it runs in parallel with adhesive cure.

Earlier SL models (pre-2015 roughly) feature heated windscreens with rain sensors and basic tinting, whilst mid-generation variants add solar-control coatings and sometimes acoustic laminate for enhanced comfort. From 2022 onwards, newer SL models incorporate front windscreen-mounted cameras as part of Mercedes' Driver Assistance Package, which introduces the calibration requirement discussed above.

Yes, all active SL variants in our catalogue carry integrated antenna elements — typically for radio and DAB reception. Some higher-specification models also feature a separate TV antenna for rear-seat entertainment.

When your windscreen is replaced, the matching antenna print and connector are included so your vehicle's reception is fully restored on fitting.

Yes, all SL models feature a small box along the bottom of the windscreen displaying the vehicle's VIN (chassis number) — a factory identifier that is transferred to your replacement glass during fitting.
