Great experience and would 100% recommend.

After a very bad experience with Berry BMW I chose U.K. car glass to replace my windscreen and they did an amazing job! The order was placed easily online with the booking slot a couple of days in advance. The communication was great from the office and the technician who was fitting the windscreen. If I need any assistance in the future I will be definitely get U.K. car glass in. Thanks

What to expect during your BMW 1 Series rear window replacement

Replacing your rear window is straightforward — here's how the process unfolds.

  1. 1

You'll answer a quick online quiz about your 1 Series to identify your exact variant and rear-window specification.

  2. 2

Our parts-check team confirms your glass's features — antenna type, tinting, heating elements — before matching you with a fitter.

  3. 3

A local technician near you is selected based on their expertise and availability.

  4. 4

On the fitting day, your fitter removes the shattered glass, clears accessible shards, and installs your replacement — typically 30–60 minutes of their time.

  5. 5

Your fitter confirms the drive-away time with you before completing the job.

  6. 6

You'll receive a two-year warranty on workmanship and glass quality; we recommend a professional valet afterwards to address any shards in hard-to-reach places.

From online quote to fitted replacement, you're supported by our network of trusted local technicians and covered by a two-year warranty.

Mobile fitting or workshop visit for your 1 Series?

Most 1 Series rear-window replacements are completed at your address via mobile fitting. However, the 1 Series does not typically require ADAS calibration for rear-window replacement — calibration applies only to windscreen jobs.

If your model's rear window includes integrated features like antennas, heating elements, or brake lights, fitting at a workshop may occasionally be preferred to ensure proper electrical reconnection in a controlled environment. Your fitter will advise during the booking.

We confirm the specific answer for your vehicle when you book.

What features does your 1 Series have?

Tap a feature to see what it is, how to spot it on your car, and how it affects glass replacement. We confirm the exact match for your vehicle when you book.

  • Antenna5
    2004–2026

On the BMW 1 Series: fitted on every one of the 5 rear window variants we list; model years 2004–2026.

    What it means

An aerial laminated into the glass for radio, DAB or TV reception — your replacement carries the matching antenna print and connector so reception is restored.

    On your BMW 1 Series

Confirmed during the quote process; most modern 1 Series variants include this feature.

  • Heated Rear Windscreen5
    2004–2026

On the BMW 1 Series: fitted on every one of the 5 rear window variants we list; model years 2004–2026.

Heated rear windscreen with integrated wires clears mist and ice when you switch on the demister.

    What it means

A heated rear windscreen contains fine heating wires embedded within the glass. When you activate the rear demister, an electrical current passes through these wires, warming the glass and melting ice or condensation. This feature is particularly useful in cold or damp weather, improving rear visibility quickly. The heating grid is integral to the glass and connected to your vehicle's electrical circuit via connectors at the base of the windscreen.

    How to tell

Look at the rear windscreen from inside the vehicle — you will see a fine grid of horizontal lines across the glass, typically bronze or copper in colour. On the dashboard or steering wheel stalk, there will be a dedicated rear-demist button, usually marked with a windscreen symbol and heating lines. If in doubt, ask your vehicle's service centre or consult your handbook.

    Replacement impact

Replacement rear windscreens with heated grids are widely available as original-equipment aftermarket or dealership parts. The new glass must include the factory heating grid and electrical connectors intact. The technician will reconnect the heating circuit to your vehicle's rear-demist switch. Heated rear windscreens are bonded glass, so adhesive cure time applies; drive-away time will be confirmed by the fitter on the day.

  • TV Antenna4
    2004–2018

On the BMW 1 Series: fitted on 4 of the 5 rear window variants we list (80%); model years 2004–2018.

    What it means

A TV-reception aerial laminated into the rear window, separate from the radio antenna — typically found on models with rear-seat entertainment. Your replacement preserves this function.

    On your BMW 1 Series

Present on select 1 Series variants with premium entertainment packs; confirmed at the quote stage.

  • Brake Light2
    2004–2011

On the BMW 1 Series: fitted on 2 of the 5 rear window variants we list (40%); model years 2004–2011.

    What it means

A high-level brake light integrated into the rear window glass via silkscreen or wire network. Your replacement glass must carry the same pattern so the lighting circuit reconnects cleanly.

    On your BMW 1 Series

Found on certain trims and later generations; your fitter confirms this during the parts check.

  • Green2
    2004–2018

On the BMW 1 Series: fitted on 2 of the 5 rear window variants we list (40%); model years 2004–2018.

    What it means

A subtle tint to the rear window glass — nearly invisible but present on roughly 9 in 10 modern vehicles. A replacement must match this tint precisely.

    On your BMW 1 Series

Visible only when looking carefully at the glass alongside other panels; confirmed during your quote.

  • Grey Privacy2
    2011–2026

On the BMW 1 Series: fitted on 2 of the 5 rear window variants we list (40%); model years 2011–2026.

Dark grey tint on rear windows provides privacy and reduces interior heat and glare.

    What it means

Dark grey tint, formally known as privacy glass, is a factory-applied tint created through a deep-dipping process during glass manufacture. The pigment is infused into the inner surface of the glass, darkening the rear windows (and sometimes rear doors) significantly more than the front. This reduces heat transmission, minimises glare, and obscures the interior from outside view. It's standard on the rear half of many modern vehicles.

    How to tell

Compare the rear side windows and rear window (backlight) to the front side windows — the rear glass will be noticeably darker. Check your vehicle documents or ask your dealership service centre if you're unsure whether your car left the factory with privacy glass.

    Replacement impact

Dark grey tinted glass must be sourced from the Original Equipment Equivalent (OEE) or dealership to ensure colour and transmission match your vehicle's existing rear glass. The tint is integral to the glass itself, not a surface coating, so aftermarket non-tinted glass will look visibly mismatched. Replacement does not require any calibration and follows standard bonded-glass cure times for rear windows.

  • Dark Green1
    2004–2011

On the BMW 1 Series: fitted on 1 of the 5 rear window variants we list (20%); model years 2004–2011.

Dark green tinted rear and side glass that's noticeably darker than the front windscreen but still see-through in daylight.

    What it means

Dark green tint is a factory-applied colour to the rear window and side windows on some vehicles. It serves both aesthetic and functional purposes: it reduces glare and heat from sunlight, provides a degree of privacy without completely obscuring the interior, and contributes to the vehicle's overall design. Unlike privacy glass (which is much darker and difficult to see through from outside), dark green tint maintains reasonable transparency while still offering a tinted appearance.

    How to tell

Look at your rear window and rear side windows in daylight. If they appear noticeably darker and greenish in tone compared to your front windscreen, you have dark green tint. The tint will be clearly visible when you look at the vehicle from outside, but you'll still be able to see through to the interior in normal daylight. Check your vehicle documentation or ask your dealership if you're uncertain.

    Replacement impact

Replacement glass must match the original dark green tint specification to maintain the vehicle's appearance and light-control properties. We source OEM or OE-equivalent tinted glass to the correct colour specification. Tinted glass is available from stock for most common vehicles, though lead times may occasionally be slightly longer than untinted variants. Installation and cure procedures are identical to standard glass; tint does not affect fitting time or drive-away windows.

About the BMW 1 Series

The BMW 1 Series has evolved through multiple generations since 2004, each with distinct rear-window specifications. Earlier models carry straightforward toughened glass, while many variants from the mid-2010s onwards feature integrated antennas for radio and DAB reception — a replacement must preserve these elements so your vehicle's reception remains uninterrupted.

Some 1 Series models also include privacy tinting on the rear window, creating a darker appearance than the windscreen. Later variants may carry brake-light integration or heating elements, depending on trim and specification. All of these features must be matched during replacement to ensure your car functions as originally designed.
