NEVER STRIM NEAR YOUR CAR

I broke my front passenger window strimming the edge of my front lawn, when the strimmer shot a stone towards my car. Although I had cover I thought I might find out how much it might be. An online search brought up UK Car Glass and the price was £295, reasonable I thought. The only other site that was thrown up and did windows other that a front screen was Autoglass and I had to ring up to get a price. I asked the agent to give me a non-insured figure and his response was a little shocking. He got as far as "One Thousand" when I cut in with "WHAT!" "You must be mad." He did offer a discount, but it wouln't be anywhere near the price from UK Car Glass. I told him to forget it and booked my appointment with UK Car Glass for the next day. I was not there when the work was done, but I inspected my vehicle on my return home and was pleased with what I found. I will never use Autoglass again, although it is 30 years since my last window replacement, so I will probably be dead, before I need another.

Absolutely awful!

Absolutely Awful! Initial message told us we’d get a call 30 mins before they arrive…. The call came to say “We are here” (they weren’t) but we eventually located them at a neighbour’s. Windscreen got replaced quickly and, on leaving, I was told to leave the two stickers on for an hour. They were gone so quickly I couldn’t even point out the oil leaks from their van that are now on our drive, grrr. Having washed the vehicle, we discovered the new windscreen leaks, so I called the UK Car Glass number given to ask for help only to be told I can’t wash it for four days. The “lads” were apparently next to him and claimed to have told me that. When I explained that that was an absolute lie as they only gave me the key back and said to leave the two stickers on for an hour, and if I had known I would not have washed it, the rude man on the phone said “It’s common knowledge”. I don’t work in the windscreen replacement industry and it wasn’t common knowledge (nor to all the people I told about the awful service)!!! When I asked for the rude man’s name for our complaint, he told me it was UK Car Glass and eventually, after much reluctance, said he was called Gareth (though we expect that was yet another lie). All in all, an absolutely awful experience and we have their oil leaks on the drive now as reminder

Great service and a great price!

I'd waited a week to be given an appointment by the usual insurance approved company and a quote of nearly £1 k for a rear screen on a Smart Forfour! I was told it was with purchasing and they couldn't give me a date to fit a replacement. Imagine my joy when I phoned Jaquie at UK Car Glass and on a Friday afternoon and within 15 minutes she had arranged for a mobile team to come to my home, on Monday, and fit a new rear screen at a third of the price! Jaquie was great and so we're the fitting team. Professional all the way, so good, they're now in my directory for the future. Thoroughly recommended.

Painless service, just don't rely on the quote too much

Pretty painless process for booking a replacement windscreen and very good availability in terms of the wait for fitting. Also one of the few who will give you a quote without having to surrender all your personal information just to get an email/phone call. Be advised the quote you get might not actually be what you have to pay though as they will come back with another price after booking if they find something else you need (you can't state much when requesting the quote) so don't necessarily take that price as gospel even though the site suggests they've already checked this before quoting. The contractor who came out was excellent. On time, did exactly what he said he was going to do, and almost to the minute of how long he said it would take. Kept us updated along the way with progress etc. and left no trace he'd been there (apart from a shiny new screen of course!). Definite 5/5 for the "boots on the ground" so to speak.

Overall a positive experience

Apart from a slight mix up with fitting dates I don't have a bad word to say about my glass replacement. Ash, the fitter, got in touch to confirm the correct glass had been ordered and to assure me of his arrival time. He and his colleague turned up on time and were polite, pleasant and efficient. They cleaned up really well and left me feeling pleased I had chosen UK Car Glass to replace my broken window. I'd have no doubts about recommending this firm to anyone needing a car window replacing.

Checking the small print

This is good value and excellent service. Having checked my insurance to find the word "glass"only covered the windscreen, I went to the default "A" listed glass replacement mob, and having fallen off my chair being quoted almost double what I ended up paying, this company was a real blessing. Can't thank Mark enough for his help.

Professional and Courteous Service

The installers arrived promptly and did an outstanding job. They were both professional in the installation and providing instructions on the waiting time before washing the car and driving to allow the sealant to cure. I would highly recommend their service to anyone.

What Volkswagen rear window features mean

Tap a feature to see what it is, how to spot it on your car, and how it affects glass replacement. We confirm the exact match for your vehicle when you book.

  • Heated Rear Windscreen215
    1975–2026

Heated rear windscreen with integrated wires clears mist and ice when you switch on the demister.

    What it means

A heated rear windscreen contains fine heating wires embedded within the glass. When you activate the rear demister, an electrical current passes through these wires, warming the glass and melting ice or condensation. This feature is particularly useful in cold or damp weather, improving rear visibility quickly. The heating grid is integral to the glass and connected to your vehicle's electrical circuit via connectors at the base of the windscreen.

    How to tell

Look at the rear windscreen from inside the vehicle — you will see a fine grid of horizontal lines across the glass, typically bronze or copper in colour. On the dashboard or steering wheel stalk, there will be a dedicated rear-demist button, usually marked with a windscreen symbol and heating lines. If in doubt, ask your vehicle's service centre or consult your handbook.

    Replacement impact

Replacement rear windscreens with heated grids are widely available as original-equipment aftermarket or dealership parts. The new glass must include the factory heating grid and electrical connectors intact. The technician will reconnect the heating circuit to your vehicle's rear-demist switch. Heated rear windscreens are bonded glass, so adhesive cure time applies; drive-away time will be confirmed by the fitter on the day.

  • Green137
    1975–2026

Green tint reduces glare and improves visual comfort by filtering certain light wavelengths.

    What it means

Green tint is a light-filtering coating applied to the glass during manufacture. It absorbs and reduces transmission of certain wavelengths of light, primarily to cut glare from sunlight and reflections. The tint is subtle — often barely visible to the naked eye — but measurably improves visual comfort during prolonged driving, particularly in bright conditions. It's a factory specification chosen by the vehicle manufacturer to balance daylight comfort with interior visibility and aesthetic consistency across all glass in the vehicle.

    How to tell

The easiest way to check is to roll your side window halfway down and hold a piece of white paper behind it. Look carefully for a tint cast — green tint will appear as a subtle green hue compared to clear glass. Your windscreen will have the same tint as your side windows. You can also ask your vehicle's dealership or service centre — they'll have the original specification on file.

    Replacement impact

Green-tinted replacement glass must match the original tint specification to maintain visual consistency across all windows and preserve the vehicle's interior aesthetics. Aftermarket OE-equivalent (OEE) green-tinted glass is widely available, though some vehicles may require original equipment (OEM) dealership glass if the tint specification is proprietary. Tint does not affect calibration, cure time, or installation procedure — it's a cosmetic and functional specification only.

  • Antenna74
    1988–2026

An aerial laminated into the windscreen or rear window restores radio, DAB or TV reception without a roof-mounted mast.

    What it means

An antenna is a conductive print laminated into the glass during manufacture, typically used for radio, DAB (digital audio broadcasting) or television reception. It replaces the traditional roof-mounted aerial mast found on older vehicles. The antenna is integrated into the glass interlayer and connected to the vehicle's receiver unit via a connector embedded in the glass edge. This design offers a cleaner aesthetic, reduces wind noise, and eliminates the vulnerability of a protruding mast to damage or theft.

    How to tell

Check your vehicle's roof — if there is no visible aerial mast, your car likely has a laminated antenna. You can also ask your dealer or service centre whether your windscreen or rear window carries an antenna print. The connector may be visible on the glass edge or inside the door frame trim.

    Replacement impact

When replacing glass with a laminated antenna, the replacement must carry the matching antenna print and connector to restore reception immediately on fitting. Aftermarket or original-equipment glass with the correct antenna specification is essential; a plain replacement will leave you without radio or DAB signal. Our fitters verify the antenna specification during booking and source the correct variant before the appointment.

  • Solar Control70
    1990–2026

Solar control glass absorbs infrared rays to reduce heat and improve cabin comfort.

    What it means

Solar control is a coating applied to the windscreen that absorbs the sun's infrared radiation rather than allowing it to pass through into the cabin. This reduces solar heat gain, helping to keep the interior cooler and more comfortable, particularly in warm weather or direct sunlight. The coating is transparent to visible light, so it doesn't darken the windscreen or affect visibility. It's a passive thermal management feature that works continuously whenever the sun is shining on the glass.

    How to tell

Check your vehicle's specification sheet or contact your dealership service centre to confirm whether solar control glass is fitted. Some manufacturers list it as 'solar control windscreen', 'heat-reflective glass', or 'thermal management glass'. It's a factory-fitted feature and won't be visibly obvious from outside the car — the coating is integral to the glass itself.

    Replacement impact

Solar control glass is a factory-fitted specification. When replacing the windscreen, a solar control variant must be sourced to match the original. This is a standard glass type with no special fitting implications or calibration requirements. Cure and drive-away times follow normal windscreen bonding procedures. Confirm with your fitter that the replacement glass includes solar control to maintain the original thermal performance.

  • Brake Light39
    1988–2026

A brake light integrated into the rear window glass itself, requiring a matching replacement to reconnect the original lighting circuit.

    What it means

A brake light integrated into the rear window glass is a lighting element built directly into the glass panel during manufacturing. Rather than using a separate lamp cluster mounted to the vehicle body, the light circuit is routed through conductive elements — typically a silkscreen pattern, wire network, or bracket assembly — embedded in or bonded to the glass itself. When you brake, this integrated light illuminates to warn following traffic. It combines functionality with design integration, reducing the number of separate components on the rear of the vehicle.

    How to tell

Check your vehicle's rear window for a visible pattern of fine lines or wires running across the glass, usually near the top edge or spanning the upper portion. Look at your vehicle's manual or contact your dealer's service centre — they can confirm whether your rear window carries an integrated brake light. If you see a separate brake-light cluster mounted to the bodywork instead, your vehicle does not have this feature.

    Replacement impact

The replacement rear window must carry the identical integrated brake-light pattern so the original lighting circuit reconnects without modification. The conductive elements — whether silkscreen, wiring, or bracket fittings — must align precisely with the vehicle's electrical connections. Using a standard rear window without this pattern would disable the brake light. We source the correct OE-specification glass to ensure a seamless fit and restore full functionality.

  • Green Privacy30
    1990–2026

Dark green tint on rear and side windows is a factory colour choice, not a safety or performance feature.

    What it means

Dark green is a factory tint applied to the glass during manufacture. It's purely aesthetic — a colour variant chosen by the vehicle designer to complement the body paint and interior trim. Unlike some tints that reduce solar heat or glare, dark green is decorative. Most vehicles have standard or light green glass; dark green is less common and typically found on specific trim levels or model years.

    How to tell

Look at your rear and side windows from outside the car in daylight. If they appear noticeably darker or more saturated green than the front windscreen, you likely have dark green glass. You can also check your vehicle's specification sheet from the dealer or original documentation — tint colour is sometimes listed under 'glass' or 'exterior finishes'. If uncertain, ask your local dealership service centre.

    Replacement impact

Dark green replacement glass must match the original tint colour exactly — a standard or light green windscreen will look visibly mismatched against dark green rear windows. Sourcing the correct variant can take slightly longer than standard glass, as it's less common. No calibration is involved with tinted glass itself. Fitting and cure time are unaffected.

  • Clear29
    1979–2026Calibration varies by vehicle

Clear windscreen glass has no tint; most cars have a slight tint as standard.

    What it means

A clear windscreen contains no added tint layer. Most modern windscreens incorporate a subtle tint (typically blue, green, grey or bronze) as standard to reduce glare, provide UV protection, and improve cabin comfort. A genuinely clear windscreen is the absence of this tint. Clear glass is less common than tinted variants and is sometimes specified for aesthetic or operational reasons, though the tint difference is usually imperceptible to the naked eye.

    How to tell

Lower your side window halfway and hold a white piece of paper behind it. If you see a noticeable colour cast (blue, green, grey or bronze) in the side glass, your windscreen has the same tint. You can also ask your vehicle's dealership or service centre to confirm the windscreen specification in your service records.

    Replacement impact

Clear windscreen replacement uses the same installation process as any other windscreen. No special calibration or extended cure time applies. Sourcing is straightforward — clear glass is widely available as an aftermarket replacement. Installation time and drive-away restrictions follow standard windscreen replacement timings.

  • Grey Privacy20
    2006–2026

Dark grey tint on rear windows provides privacy and reduces interior heat and glare.

    What it means

Dark grey tint, formally known as privacy glass, is a factory-applied tint created through a deep-dipping process during glass manufacture. The pigment is infused into the inner surface of the glass, darkening the rear windows (and sometimes rear doors) significantly more than the front. This reduces heat transmission, minimises glare, and obscures the interior from outside view. It's standard on the rear half of many modern vehicles.

    How to tell

Compare the rear side windows and rear window (backlight) to the front side windows — the rear glass will be noticeably darker. Check your vehicle documents or ask your dealership service centre if you're unsure whether your car left the factory with privacy glass.

    Replacement impact

Dark grey tinted glass must be sourced from the Original Equipment Equivalent (OEE) or dealership to ensure colour and transmission match your vehicle's existing rear glass. The tint is integral to the glass itself, not a surface coating, so aftermarket non-tinted glass will look visibly mismatched. Replacement does not require any calibration and follows standard bonded-glass cure times for rear windows.

  • Unheated Rear Windscreen10
    1991–2026

A rear window without heating elements — selected when the model's standard specification includes a heated rear glass option.

    What it means

An unheated rear window is a variant specification where the rear glass does not include integrated electric heating wires. Many vehicle models offer heated rear glass as standard or as an option to demist the window quickly in cold or wet conditions. An unheated rear window omits this feature entirely. It is a cost-conscious choice and remains fully functional for visibility and weather protection — demisting simply takes longer and relies on the vehicle's cabin heating system alone.

    How to tell

Check your vehicle's specification sheet or service documentation. If your model range lists 'heated rear window' or 'rear demister' as a standard or optional feature and your car does not have it, you have an unheated variant. You can also look at the rear window itself — a heated rear window shows a faint pattern of horizontal heating wires when you look closely at the glass. An unheated window appears completely clear with no wire pattern visible.

    Replacement impact

Replacement glass must match your original specification. If your vehicle has an unheated rear window, the replacement must also be unheated — you cannot fit a heated variant without additional wiring and control-module work, which falls outside standard glass replacement scope. Conversely, if heated glass is standard for your model and you wish to stay unheated, confirm this choice at booking. No calibration is involved with rear-window replacement.

  • Dark Green9
    2003–2026

Dark green tinted rear and side glass that's noticeably darker than the front windscreen but still see-through in daylight.

    What it means

Dark green tint is a factory-applied colour to the rear window and side windows on some vehicles. It serves both aesthetic and functional purposes: it reduces glare and heat from sunlight, provides a degree of privacy without completely obscuring the interior, and contributes to the vehicle's overall design. Unlike privacy glass (which is much darker and difficult to see through from outside), dark green tint maintains reasonable transparency while still offering a tinted appearance.

    How to tell

Look at your rear window and rear side windows in daylight. If they appear noticeably darker and greenish in tone compared to your front windscreen, you have dark green tint. The tint will be clearly visible when you look at the vehicle from outside, but you'll still be able to see through to the interior in normal daylight. Check your vehicle documentation or ask your dealership if you're uncertain.

    Replacement impact

Replacement glass must match the original dark green tint specification to maintain the vehicle's appearance and light-control properties. We source OEM or OE-equivalent tinted glass to the correct colour specification. Tinted glass is available from stock for most common vehicles, though lead times may occasionally be slightly longer than untinted variants. Installation and cure procedures are identical to standard glass; tint does not affect fitting time or drive-away windows.

  • Heated Windscreen6
    2004–2026

Heated windscreens use embedded wires to quickly clear ice and condensation in cold weather.

    What it means

A heated windscreen is integrated with a fine mesh of electrical wires embedded within the glass itself. When activated, these wires generate heat to warm the windscreen surface, helping to rapidly clear frost, ice, and condensation during cold or damp conditions. This feature improves visibility and safety in winter driving and reduces reliance on engine heat and demister air, which can be slower on very cold mornings.

    How to tell

Check your vehicle's handbook or contact your dealership service centre — they can confirm whether your model includes this feature. Look for a dashboard symbol (usually a windscreen icon with heat waves) when you activate the function, or check your infotainment settings for a heating or climate option linked to the windscreen. Some vehicles have a dedicated button on the stalk or console.

    Replacement impact

Heated windscreens require replacement glass to be of the correct heated specification — standard unheated glass cannot be fitted. The replacement glass must be sourced to match your vehicle's exact heated-wire configuration. Installation is straightforward, though the technician will confirm the heating element is functioning correctly after fitting. No calibration is required for this feature.

  • TV Antenna3
    2010–2023

A TV-reception aerial printed into the rear window, typically for in-car entertainment systems.

    What it means

A TV antenna is an aerial pattern laminated into the rear windscreen or rear side window to receive broadcast television signals. It's a separate system from the vehicle's radio or mobile antenna and is typically found in vehicles equipped with rear-seat entertainment systems. The antenna is printed directly onto or into the glass during manufacture, so when the glass is replaced, the antenna pattern must be reproduced on the replacement to maintain reception quality.

    How to tell

Check your vehicle's specification sheet or handbook for rear-seat entertainment or TV tuner capability. If your car has a rear-seat entertainment system with a TV tuner, the rear window will have a TV antenna. You can also ask your dealer or service centre to confirm whether your vehicle has this feature.

    Replacement impact

When the rear window is replaced, the replacement glass must include the matching TV antenna print to preserve reception. OEM (original equipment manufacturer) glass is typically required to ensure the antenna pattern is identical. The antenna is passive and requires no calibration or specialist procedures after fitting. Cure time for bonded rear glass is required; the fitter will confirm the drive-away time on the day.

  • Acoustic (Noise reduction)2
    2017–2026

Acoustic glass reduces cabin noise for a quieter, more comfortable ride.

    What it means

Acoustic windscreen glass is laminated with a special acoustic interlayer that absorbs and dampens sound vibrations. It reduces exterior noise—from traffic, wind, and road surface—before it enters the passenger compartment. This makes the cabin noticeably quieter and creates a more peaceful driving experience. It's a comfort feature, not a safety one; standard laminated windscreens already meet impact safety requirements.

    How to tell

Check your windscreen for an ear symbol, the word 'Acoustic', a capital 'A', or the term 'SoundScreen' printed in one of the four corners. These markings indicate acoustic-grade glass. You can also ask your vehicle's dealership or service centre whether your model came fitted with acoustic glass—it's often a factory option on comfort or premium trims.

    Replacement impact

Acoustic glass is always laminated and bonds to the frame like any standard windscreen, so replacement follows the normal bonded-glass procedure. No specialist calibration is required. The replacement technician will fit it using standard adhesive and sealant. Cure time and drive-away restrictions are identical to standard laminated windscreens. Acoustic glass is widely available as an aftermarket OE-equivalent option.

  • Dark Grey1
    2004–2026

A tinted grey glass that's darker than the front windows but still lets you see through in daylight.

    What it means

Dark grey tint is a factory-fitted glass option that reduces glare and heat whilst maintaining visibility in normal daylight conditions. It sits between clear glass (front windscreen and windows) and privacy glass (rear windows on some models), offering a subtle aesthetic enhancement and mild thermal benefit. The tint is integral to the glass laminate or coating and cannot be applied or removed after manufacture.

    How to tell

Look at your rear window or rear side windows in daylight. If they appear noticeably darker than your front windscreen but you can still see clearly through them from outside, you have dark grey tint.

    Replacement impact

When replacing dark grey glass, the replacement must match the original tint specification to maintain consistency with your vehicle's remaining windows and factory thermal performance. Dark grey tint is specified at manufacture and must be sourced as OEM or OE-equivalent glass; standard clear replacements will not match. No calibration is required for this glass type.

  • Flat1
    2007–2011

A flat glass panel, common on van rear quarters and fixed side panels, sourced as a separate variant from curved equivalents.

    What it means

Flat glass refers to a side or rear panel with a plane surface rather than a curved or contoured profile. This is typical of van rear quarter glass, fixed side panels on certain commercial vehicles, and some fixed glazing on passenger cars. Flat glass is structurally simpler than curved variants and is often used where aerodynamics or design complexity is less critical. It's stocked and catalogued separately from any curved equivalent on the same vehicle, because the manufacturing process, fit tolerances, and seal requirements differ.

    How to tell

Check your vehicle's side or rear panels visually — flat glass will have a noticeably plane surface when you look at its profile from the side. Compare it to curved windscreens or rear windows, which have obvious contour. If you're unsure, ask your vehicle's service centre or dealership parts department whether your side or rear glass is flat or curved; they can confirm from the parts diagram.

    Replacement impact

Flat glass replacement is straightforward — no calibration is involved because flat glass carries no sensors, cameras, or electronic features. The fit process is typically faster than curved glass because the seal and adhesive application follows a flat plane. Cure time applies if the glass is bonded (e.g. fixed side panels or rear windows), but the cure chemistry is standard. Aftermarket flat glass variants are usually available alongside OEM options, so sourcing is rarely a constraint.

  • GPS1
    2005–2015

GPS antenna built into the windscreen connects your sat-nav to satellite signals for reliable navigation.

    What it means

A GPS antenna is laminated into the windscreen glass during manufacture, providing a direct aerial connection for your vehicle's satellite-navigation system. This integrated design offers better signal reception than external antennas and a cleaner aesthetic. The antenna print and electrical connector are engineered into the glass itself, allowing the navigation receiver to lock onto GPS satellites without interference from the vehicle's metal body or other components.

    How to tell

Check your vehicle's handbook or ask your dealership service centre whether your windscreen carries an integrated GPS antenna. You won't see obvious external aerials or connectors on the glass itself — the antenna is laminated internally. If your sat-nav works reliably without a visible roof-mounted antenna, it's likely GPS-equipped.

    Replacement impact

Replacement windscreens with GPS antennas must be sourced as OEM (original-equipment) glass to preserve navigation functionality. The antenna print pattern and electrical connector are specific to your vehicle's sat-nav system. Aftermarket glass without the antenna print will not support GPS reception. We confirm OEM availability when you book; lead times may be slightly longer than standard glass.
