Your tyres are one of the most important safety components on your car, particularly in winter conditions.

Before the colder months arrive, it’s a good idea to check both the tread depth (minimum 1.6mm) and tyre pressure on each wheel.

Make sure your tyres are correctly inflated and that the tread depth meets recommended levels. If they are worn or below the legal limit, replacing them sooner rather than later can help prevent problems on wet, icy, or snowy roads.

It is your responsibility to ensure your vehicle is roadworthy at all times under the Road Traffic Act, and this also plays an important role in meeting MOT requirements.

Replace Wiper Blades and Check Lights

Many drivers overlook their wiper blades and vehicle lights when preparing for winter. Worn wiper blades can leave streaks or smears on the windscreen, reducing visibility during heavy rain, sleet, or snow.

Drivers must also clear all snow and ice from windows, windscreens, and mirrors before setting off to ensure a full, unobstructed view of the road. Number plates must remain clearly visible at all times.

It’s equally important to check that all headlights, brake lights, and rear lights are working correctly. Dim or faulty bulbs can significantly reduce visibility in poor weather or fog, increasing the risk of accidents.

Professional tip: After using your car for the day, clean any dirt or debris from the windscreen. If the glass freezes overnight, this can help prevent scratching the surface when scraping ice the following morning. Over time, scratched or damaged glass can affect visibility and may indicate the need for a windscreen replacement.

How Does Winter Affect Our Windscreen Replacement Service?

The winter months are the least favourable time of year for our mobile technicians.

Cold hands, wet conditions, and unpredictable weather can make scheduling and job coordination more challenging, sometimes resulting in appointments needing to be rescheduled.

Windscreen adhesive does not bond effectively in very cold temperatures, with ideal conditions requiring temperatures of around 8°C or higher. In colder weather, this can significantly prolong the minimum drive-away time, meaning the vehicle needs to remain stationary for longer to ensure the adhesive cures safely.

For this reason, work often needs to be carried out in a controlled environment, such as a pre-heated garage — something not all customers have available at home.

This is why some bookings may be rearranged for a workshop appointment, where the correct conditions can be consistently met to ensure a safe and reliable installation.
